This Is Me. Why loving what you do is your most powerful business asset.
No top hat. No ringmaster’s coat. No grand theatrical entrance.
A man with a laptop. A man with a phone. A man with a broadband connection and some data.
And I love it.
Love what you do #
That last sentence is not a throwaway. It’s the most important thing I can say about the work of lead generation and possibly about any work worth doing. Because loving what you do changes everything about how you show up, how you communicate, and ultimately how effective you are.
When you genuinely care about the work, it comes through in every conversation. The curiosity is real. The patience is authentic. The persistence doesn’t feel like grinding because the search itself is genuinely interesting. Prospects feel the difference between someone going through the motions and someone who actually wants to be there.
A deliberate choice #
The Company of One model, a laptop, a phone, a broadband connection, and the focused application of twenty years of experience, is not a lesser version of a bigger operation. It’s a deliberate choice. Agile, personal, fully committed to each client rather than distributed thinly across a portfolio managed by a team of people who’ve never spoken to you.
It’s also, if I’m honest, a model that only works sustainably when you love the work. The solitary nature of it, the self-motivation required, the resilience needed on the slow days. None of that is manageable long term without genuine enthusiasm for what you’re doing and why.
Does love show in the work you do? #
So here’s the question worth sitting with today: what do you love about your own professional role? And is it showing in your work?
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” — Steve Jobs
