The Thrill of the Search

The thrill of the search. Why genuine curiosity is a lead generator’s greatest asset.

Every morning, before the day’s conversations begin, there’s a moment of quiet anticipation.

What am I going to find today?

Curiosity, not anxiety #

It sounds like a small thing. But that question — asked honestly, with genuine curiosity rather than quota-driven anxiety — changes everything about how you approach the work of finding new clients.

Lead generation has a reputation problem. It’s associated in many people’s minds with grinding persistence, scripted calls, and the quiet desperation of someone who needs to hit a number. And for those who approach it that way, that reputation is probably fair.

But there’s another way to experience it entirely.

Fascination, rather than fear #

When the search is driven by fascination rather than fear, something shifts. You’re no longer hunting. You’re exploring. Each new name on a list becomes a potential conversation rather than a potential conversion. Each call becomes a chance to learn something about an industry, a business, a person — regardless of whether it leads anywhere commercially right now.

The fascination sustains you through the inevitable slow days. It keeps the energy in your voice when you’ve spoken to a dozen people and none of them were ready. It means you show up to the hundredth conversation with the same genuine interest you brought to the first.

Curiosity: a disarming quality #

And people feel it. Curiosity is one of the most disarming qualities a caller can have. It signals that you’re interested in them, not just in selling to them. That signal, communicated consistently over time, builds the kind of trust that eventually turns conversations into conversions.

The search is genuinely thrilling. Approach it that way.

“Conversations lead to conversions.”
