There’s a school of thought in sales and marketing that says you need to be bold, assertive, even a little pushy to get results. Make noise. Demand attention. Close hard.
I’ve never believed it. And after many years working with business owners, I’m more convinced than ever that the opposite is true.
Gentleness works #
Gentleness works. Empathy works. Not because they’re nice qualities to have, but because they’re strategically effective. When your messaging makes someone feel understood rather than targeted, something shifts. The guard comes down. The conversation opens.
Think about what your ideal clients are actually carrying around with them each day. Pressure to grow. Worry about their teams. Frustration with processes that don’t work. Uncertainty about what to do next. They’re not looking for another supplier pushing products at them. They’re looking for someone who gets it.
Solutions to make lives a little easier #
So offer solutions that make their lives a little easier. Speak to the stress they feel rather than the product you sell. Show them what a quieter, more confident week in business might look like with the right support in place.
This doesn’t mean being passive or lacking conviction. Gandhi had plenty of conviction. But he understood that force of character and gentleness of manner are not opposites — they work beautifully together.
Your message can be warm and still be powerful. Your approach can be empathetic and still be purposeful. A kind word, delivered at the right moment, can open a door that a hundred cold pitches never would.
“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” — Mahatma Gandhi
