Our third place

1 min read

Our third place: in a world where we’re constantly juggling work deadlines and home responsibilities, the discovery of a third place has become increasingly important.

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term third place to describe those vital spaces between work and home where we can truly be ourselves. Think sports clubs, local cafes, or in my case, choir practice. These aren’t just physical locations – they’re restful places for the soul.

The need for these spaces has never been more crucial. Recent studies show that over 30% of us experience serious loneliness and workplace loneliness has increased significantly since the pandemic. Yet just 2-3 hours of social connection per day can halve stress levels and significantly boost our mental wellbeing.

What makes a great third place?

It’s where hierarchy dissolves – your job title doesn’t matter when you’re sharing a hobby with others.

You can be present without pressure – there’s no deadline, no performance review, no family obligations.

Meaningful connections form naturally through shared interests.

The focus shifts from what you do to who you are.

For me, singing through a few chords (hopefully in the right key 😊) exemplifies this perfectly. When I’m singing, spreadsheets and domestic tasks fade away. While it requires focus, singing engages a completely different part of my brain. I’m creating something harmonic (again, hopefully!) with others who share my passion, regardless of their professional background or social status.

These spaces are becoming increasingly rare in our digital age, yet they’re more important than ever. Research shows that people with access to third places report much higher life satisfaction and feel a stronger sense of community belonging.

The key is finding somewhere that lets us step away from our daily roles and connect with others with no airs or graces.

What is your third place? I’d love to hear what spaces and activities help you recharge and have a sense of community.

“You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens.” – Mandy Hale.
