Variety: why every call is a story waiting to be discovered.

“We’re happy with our current arrangements, but thank you for calling, Richard.”

“We’re in talks to merge with an overseas business. We won’t be coming to market.”

“I’m semi-retired and downsizing.”

“Please call again in three months, we’ll be taking a closer look then.”

“I’m non-technical but keen to understand more. Can we speak today?”

“You’ve called at just the right time. May we speak next week?”

Six calls. Six completely different human stories. One morning.

Lead generation from the inside #

This is what lead generation actually looks like from the inside; not a conveyor belt of identical conversations, but an endlessly varied landscape of real people at genuinely different points in their professional lives. A business in transition. An owner finding a new pace. A company almost ready. A contact perfectly timed.

And somewhere in the background, a decision maker up on a roof replacing loose tiles, which is, in itself, an interesting story.

The longer I involve myself in this work, the more fascinated I become. Not by the measures: the dials made, the decision makers reached, the conversions tracked, but by the individual stories that emerge from genuine conversation with genuine people.

Where technology struggles #

This is precisely what technology cannot replicate. An algorithm can send a message. It cannot be curious about the answer. It cannot notice the detail, follow the thread, or recognise the human moment hiding inside an apparently routine response.

Searching for stories is far too enlightening to be considered dull and mundane.

Conversation is not a task to be automated. It’s where the real work happens.

“Conversation is the best content.” – Ted Rubin
