Fear stops most business owners from building a business around their real strength:
Fear that if you say “this is how I work,” people will reject it. Fear that if you stop being everything to everyone, you’ll starve. Fear that charging your worth means someone cheaper will undercut you.
These fears are real. But they’re also why so many talented people end up exhausted, undervalued, and building businesses that don’t reflect who they are.
Interestingly though, the moment you stop being everything to everyone, something shifts.
Saying no to wrong-fit work #
For years, I took projects that didn’t align with my approach because the revenue was there. But that work drained me. Eventually, I learned that saying no to wrong-fit work creates space for right-fit work.
Being specific about who you serve #
When you clearly articulate your approach, some clients self-select out. Terrifying and liberating. You lose some but gain the exact clients you can serve brilliantly.
Charging what you’re worth #
When you understand your unique value, price becomes less relevant. But this requires letting price-sensitive prospects go.
I remember the first time a client said my approach wasn’t what they wanted. I would have tried to change years earlier. But by then, I’d learned: not being right for everyone means being perfect for someone.
The courage doesn’t come from confidence #
Courage comes from clarity.
You don’t need to feel brave. You need to be clear about what you offer, who benefits most, and what it’s worth. The courage follows.
Stop trying to be everything to everyone. Start being exactly what you are to the people who need it most.
